Colt Python 1st generation grips, 1955-1960

This variation was used on Colt Python up to 1960. They have a light oil finish just like the original grips, so they are very easy to touch up if you make adjustments (for example: custom fitting the rear edge to your gun frame, or adding some “antiquing” to match the condition of your gun). We recommend Minwax Tung Oil for this, and it’s available at any good home improvement store.
The Python 1st generation target grips always had gold medallions. This grip style was also used on other E/I-frame revolvers, and those grips had silver medallions. You can choose a color below.
Note: The original grips were closely fitted to the trigger guard from the factory. Our grips will also be tight in that area, and on some guns you may have to make a small adjustment to make them fit. If you find that the trigger guard interferes, mount the grips on the provided spacer block and trim them slightly with a knife or sandpaper.
Fits any Colt Python, including current production. They will also fit the current production Anaconda.

These are the most outstanding grips you will ever see. They are much better than the original Colt grips and are beautifully made. If you did not know it, you could never tell that these were not original Colt OEM grips. Olof has my highest recommendation if you are looking for exquisite made Python grips.

My decades long quest for a minty set of Python 1rst generation grips ended abruptly the moment I found these beautiful reproductions. After reading the many glowing reviews over at coltforum.com:

These grips are virtually identical to Colt’s originals gracing those first Pythons back in the day. But the precision milling evident inside and out tells me these are superior. My expectations were exceeded.
Now, I can experience what it feels like to handle a Python bearing unblemished walnut with crisp unsoiled checkering and beautiful matching grain patterns enriched by a subdued oil finish. No worries If you put some wear and tear on them, though you might be tempted to preserve them in their brand new perfection. Buy a second set and have it both ways.
I’m just grateful to have this affordable choice now that Deer Hollow has, in harnessing modern technology, brought an iconic part of Colt history back to life. To anyone still determined to spend the time and money hunting down original Python first generation grips in new condition, good luck! For many of us who have been searching futilely, these are the most satisfying and definitive solution.

In 1955 Colt brought out a beautiful sixgun with three distinctive features. The Python had the Royal Blue Finish, you uniquely distinctive profile with the heavy under lug barrel with a ventilated rib, and beautifully full checkered walnut grips. These grips to the lot to balance the muzzle heavy feel of the Python. Then in 1960 someone decided to “improve” the Python by changing the grips. They went from the full checkered, hand filling grips to a grip with a thinner top without checkering. It was definitely a step backwards. Now the original grip is once again available. These are beautifully crafted, checkered and carried out. They not only fit the original Python but also the new 20/20 version as well as any Colt built on the Official Police grip frame. This includes the original .357 Magnum, .38 and .357 original Trooper, Official Police, Army Special, Match Target .22 or .38. These are really Good Stuff!

I just picked up these beautiful grips for my 2020 4.25″ Python; excellent quality and craftsmanship. The tolerances are very tight. I was worried at first as it did not have the drill holes for the extra two set pins that the 2020 stock handles have. There was also a bit of interference in the trigger guard as per the note, but I did not have to do any trimming or sanding; for me, a light nudge did the trick and popped the grips into place. The fit is very snug, with no play or rattling; the two extra factory set pins weren’t needed. Alignment of the grips may be off by a hair, but possible it could be easily resolved with a simple remove, realign and securing of the screw. I am glad I did not have to take a knife or drill to these precious grips. I do not trust myself.

This is my second set of grips, the other set was for a 2nd Gen 6inch Python. These 1st gens are my favorite. They look excellent and the grip feels the best of any handguns I own. I have fairly big hands (2x glove size). Extremely well made and shipped very fast. Thank you Deer Hollow!

If you are just looking at these grips, they look like really mint original gear. When you hold them, you realize they are far superior. The finish is top notch, none of the old flaky varnish finish Colt often used, this is nice matte oiled finish and the checkering is sharp as an icepick. They take a little to get on the frame, but once they click into place they are solid, no wobble, no gaps. The First Gen. grips are the best ever offered by Colt and these are the best examples ever executed.

I ordered the Colt Python 1st generation grips for my 2022 3 inch Python on May 27th. They arrived today, May 31st. Super fast shipping over a holiday weekend. I test fitted them and realized they needed a couple of passes with one of my wife’s nail boards on the top rear of the half moon on both grips to rotate perfectly and tightly in place. Their .pdf instructions were spot on. These grips are far superior than the laminated stock grips both visually and tactilely. The full checkering is a thing of beauty as is the gold medallion option I selected. They really are impressive on the 3 inch Python!

I just received my first generation python grips for my 1959 python. These have exceeded my expectations. Beautiful woodgrain just tops them off. I highly recommend these grips. They are higher quality than the originals. They fit like a glove too!

Just got my Python grips and I am stunned. The seams are tight and sharp, but the most amazing thing is how you mated up exact mirror image grain lines from two different pieces of wood so they came together in perfect matching V’s of wood grain on the bottom of the grip. The screw holes are precise and the screws fit the holes like a glove…….and when you snug up the screw on the gun the screw is the perfect length! It’s the little things that make the difference. Oh,….and the screws are the correct type just like the originals. Once again the little details that make the difference.

I knew these grips would be good but to my pleasant surprise they are spectacular. The fit on my 4.25″ Anaconda is both precise and tight needing no fitting, they are in a word perfect. The photos on Olof’s website do not do these grips justice, you have to have them in hand to truly appreciate just how good they are. Colt should offer Deer Hollow grips on their snake guns and they would sell even more of them. I look forward to dealing with Olof again, he is a credit to the collections community.

I just received my first generation Colt Python grips yesterday. They are perfect, a beautiful shade of walnut with just enough contrast. They fit perfectly , took me about a minute to install them on my 2023 three inch Python. I was gonna get the 2nd generation model which look very nice but I’m glad I spent the extra money and got the full checkered version. Feel great in the hand and look great on this Colt.

These grips look fantastic and feel superb when shooting. The stock grips that come with the gun new just look and feel wrong for a Python and these fix that completely. They aren’t cheap but well worth it and it just turns my Python into the handgun it should be. Will buy another set from Deer Hollow when it’s time for the next Python.

Just installed these grips on my 2024 blue Python.It took a few minutes to put them on, but a with a little care they fit perfectly with no adjustments. No trimming or sanding. Beautiful sharp checkering and wood. They look and feel fantastic. The craftsmanship is outstanding. Far better than the pressed plywood grips Colt supplies with the Python. These are the grips Colt should put on this gun at the factory.

Received my first generation Python grips today and set up for an afternoon project of fitting them, expecting to do some sanding and trimming. Turns out they fit absolutely perfectly with no adjustments, so I’ll have to find something else to do this afternoon… The quality and detail, even on the inside of the grips where it won’t show, is top notch.
